William Morison Alter

William Morison Alter, 82, passed away on July 2, 2022 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was the husband of the late Barbara Alter with who he shared 59 years of marriage.

Bill was born to Gerald and Mae Alter in England, Arkansas on January 8, 1940. He was the third of nine children. He served in the United States Army from 1957-1959. Following his time in the Army he moved to Wichita, Kansas where he met and married Barbara Edwards in 1962. They moved to Arkansas City in 1971. Together they had two sons - William "Billy" Alter Jr and Albert Alter. He started Alter Electric Co. in 1980. He worked at Dixie Portland Flour Mill from 1974-1997. He then decided to fulfill a lifelong dream and opened Ark City Brewery and Chestnut Place, a restaurant and microbrewery. He worked for Kan-Pak from 2000 until his retirement in 2012. Following retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and grandchildren. He moved to Tulsa, OK in 2021.
Bill had a love for steam traction engines. He built a half scale case steam traction engine in 1976 from the ground up. He was a driving force in starting the K & O Steam and Gas Engine Club. He spent many weekends traveling to various steam engine shows all over the country.

He is survived by his son Albert Alter and wife Mayme of Glenpool, OK, brothers Kirk Alter of Wichita, KS, Doug Alter of Wichita, KS, Johnny Alter of Wichita, KS, David Alter of Newkirk, OK, Les Wold of Wichita, KS, and grandchildren John Alter and wife Kim, John Mark Martinez, Lauren Korkian and husband George, Scott Alter, Ethan Alter, Quinton Alter, and great grandchildren Teegan Alter, Hudson Alter, and Wyatt Alter. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, son Billy, sister Gracie Alter, brother Jim Alter, and brother Ed Alter.

A graveside service will take place on July 30, 2022 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery with a reception following at First Assembly of God church in Arkansas City, KS.
