With heavy hearts yet profound gratitude we announce the passing of Walter Robert McFerrin Sr., better known by all as "Mac" He left his longtime but temporary residence in Preston, Oklahoma at the age of 88 for his Heavenly home on April 24th, 2026. Mac was a cherished patriarch whose warmth, kindness, joy and wisdom shaped generations.
Mac entered this world on September 30th, 1937 in Silver, Coke County, Texas as the eldest child to Bruce & Earlene McFerrin who preceded him in death. He spent his early years on the farm working hard with his parents and twin brothers as well as forging the sturdy character that would last a lifetime.
Mac married Sandra Kay Kennedy at 20 years old in Andrews, Texas on October 11th, 1957. Mac & Kay spent over 61 years together building a life full of love and exciting adventures! They traveled most of the county visiting family, friends and competing in square dancing competitions that brought them a lifetime of joy!
Mac loved coaching Bobby & Sue in sports & umpiring as many ballgames as he possibly could. Mac's love for all sports was enormous but he had a special bond with Bobby, his son, they were passionate about dirt-track racing. Him being an avid fan of almost every sport ensured a healthy & active lifestyle. Mac relished in encouraging & chasing the sporting dreams of Tera, his eldest granddaughter, no matter the distance he wanted to be there. He was at his best while laughing with Kay, watching the sports of the season, building anything that Kay dreamed up and lovingly agitating her!
Mac worked his way up in the oil and gas industry where he spent many years supervising refineries and after retirement being called back for his expertise. He had a rare ability to brighten the lives around him with his wide-eyed stories and quick witt.
Mac was the bedrock of our family- a man of immense strength and a bold personality whose love left an engraving on the hearts around him. Mr. Mac loved assisting the VBS kids with the penny wars with the same enthusiasm that he collected the church mail. His memory lives on in the stories he told, the people he cherished and the lives he touched!
Mac was preceded in death by his wife-Sandra Kay Mcferrin, son- Walter Robert (Bobby) Mcferrin Jr. and brothers-Dewayne and Wayne McFerrin.
He is survived by his daughter: Deborah (Sue) Newnam and son in law, Jeff Newnam. Daughter in law: Pamela McFerrin. 3 grandchildren: Tera Cater and husband Brian, Tonya Drawbaugh and husband Austin, Justin McFerrin and wife Caitlin. 7 great-grandchilren: Blake, Timber, Blaze, Nikolai, Kimber, Jorjia and Colt. Close family includes Don and Judy Kennedy, Roger and Nan Kennedy and numerous nephews & nieces.
Walter Robert (Mac) McFerrin will be laid to rest on May 14th, 2026 at 10am.
