Rhonda Kay Johnson

November 22, 1950 — August 16, 2023

Rhonda Kay Johnson was born on November 22, 1950 in Tulsa County, OK. She was the youngest of two children born to Charles H. and Ruby Jean (Steeples) Watkins. Rhonda met Rodney B. Johnson in 1970 while attending college at OSU Stillwater. They were married in her mother's garden on May 1, 1976 (The Colonel catered fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn.). They were happily married for 47 years and their marriage was full of love, laughter, travel and friendship.

Rhonda and Rod lived their lives in the Sapulpa Oklahoma area where Rhonda worked 35+ years as a preschool teacher, elementary school librarian, and an elementary school secretary. She retired from Freedom Elementary School in 2016.

Rhonda and Rod had two children, Todd and Seth, and Rhonda was known for being a fierce sports mom. She was a devout Christian, loved to read, an accomplished knitter, and known for her Chicken and Noodles and home-made cinnamon rolls. More than anything, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, visiting her family at the Lake House, and cheering for OSU football. She was active in her community, specifically with the school sports programs, and will be remembered as being an integral role in the development of the Sapulpa Youth Baseball Association.

At the time of retirement, Rhonda and Rod relocated to the Jenks/Glenpool Oklahoma area to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Rhonda, also lovingly referred to as Grandma and Gammy, was a devoted and loving grandparent. We want to especially acknowledge just how present and how much she loved her grand-babies. Rodney and Rhonda also spent nine years living with and caring for her mother, Ruby Jean. Rhonda and Jean were not only mother and daughter, but the best of friends.

We also want to acknowledge how hard she fought cancer, and how much we appreciate the time we had with her. However, sadly, Rhonda passed away at home on August 16, 2023 at the age of 72 with loved ones present.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Watkins and sister-in-law, Lisa Johnson. Survivors include her husband, Rodney B. Johnson of the home; sons Todd (Jen) Johnson of Bixby, OK and Seth (Rachael) Johnson of Jenks, OK; mother, Ruby Jean (Steeples) Watkins of Jenks, OK; mother-in-law, Margaret (Baird) Johnson of Bartlesville, OK; sister, Carla (Ken) Pies of Chicago, IL; brother-in-law, Rick Johnson of Bartlesville, OK; grandchildren, Michael "Mic" Kelly, Charles Johnson, William Johnson, and Rowen Johnson; nieces and nephews, Tara (Charles) Skannes of Anchorage, AK; Nicole (Mark) Pies of Chicago, IL; Shaun (Caroline) Pies of New Orleans, LA; Joya Johnson (Bryan) Christie of Grand Rapids, MI; Caly Johnson of Charleston, S.C.; and Macy Johnson of Tulsa, OK; as well as numerous cousins and great nephews and nieces.
