Myrle Paul Calmus, age 86, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by devotion, integrity, and a life lived with quiet purpose.
Born on November 18, 1939, in Seminole, Oklahoma, to Myrle and Pauline (Roberson) Calmus, he grew up with the values that would guide him throughout his life. After graduating from Webster High School-where he excelled in athletics and earned All-State and All‑American honors in 1959 in basketball and baseball -Myrle later met the woman who would become his wife, Linda Ayres. Their connection was immediate and enduring. On February 12, 1971, they married in Tulsa, Oklahoma, beginning a union that would have celebrated its 55th anniversary this past Thursday-a partnership marked by shared Christian values, mutual respect, and a deep, steady love.
Myrle's athletic talent earned him a college basketball and baseball scholarship. He began his collegiate athletic journey at Oklahoma State University before he and his brother, Richard, signed together as a package deal to play professional baseball. Myrle went on to play AAA ball for the Dodgers and the Cubs, carrying with him the discipline and determination that had shaped him since childhood.
After his playing career, Myrle's passion for sports led him into education, where he made a lasting impact as a basketball & baseball coach and educator at Tulsa Central High School. He was instrumental in starting and building a strong basketball program at Central, helping close the chapter on the original Central High School and ushering in a new era with the opening of the new school-leaving behind a proud legacy of leadership, mentorship, and dedication. He closed out his teaching career at Edison High school
Despite his many achievements, Myrle remained a humble, grounded, and simple man. Linda often described him as a "straight arrow"-someone who always knew his direction and stayed true to his beliefs. Family was the heart of his world. He cherished time spent boating, camping, visiting the lake, or attending his children and grandchildren's practices and ballgames. He also had a lifelong love of hot rods and car shows, taking particular pride in his 1937 Plymouth, a surprise Christmas gift from his wife in 1977. And, of course, he was known for his fondness for "SWEETs"-a love he never outgrew.
For nearly 30 years, Myrle began each day with a familiar and comforting routine. He would stop at McDonald's for two breakfast burritos and a small coffee before driving to the Jenks Airport and then on to the Jenks bridge. There, he found peace watching airplanes take off and land, often calling each of his children and grandchildren as part of his daily ritual, just to say " I don't want anything and I'm not going to keep you, I'm just calling to check on you and tell you to have a good day". Though he disliked flying, those quiet mornings reflected his steady, thoughtful nature and his deep desire to stay connected to the people he loved.
Myrle is survived by his devoted wife and personal RN, Linda Calmus; his children - son, Lance and wife Dawn, son Richie and wife Amy, daughter Mandy, and son Rocky and wife Teri; 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; his brother, Richard Lee Calmus; his sister, Paula Meinzer, and her husband Gary; as well as many extended family members and friends who were touched by his kindness and character.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Myrle and Pauline Calmus.
Myrle lived a life marked by purpose, humility, and love. His influence endures in the family he cherished, the students he guided, and the many lives he quietly shaped along the way.
