Karen Hughes

February 13, 1948 — January 23, 2026

Karen Irene Hughes, age 77, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, surrounded by love and the legacy of a life deeply devoted to family and care for others.

Karen was born on February 13, 1948, in Eugene, Oregon, to George and Monteen Holland. She later made her home in Duncan, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Duncan High School in 1966. The following year, she began nursing school at St. Johns Hospital, pursuing a calling rooted in compassion and service. Karen went on to work as a Registered Nurse at St. Johns, where she cared for countless patients with the same tenderness and dedication she showed to everyone in her life. After a few years of working as a nurse, she chose to leave her profession to become a homemaker, devoting herself fully to raising her children and caring for her family.

On February 22, 1969, Karen married the love of her life, John Hughes, in Duncan, Oklahoma. Their love story began on a blind date, and after just six months of courtship, they knew they were meant to build a life together. Karen and John shared over 50 beautiful years of marriage until John's passing in November of 2024. Their bond was one of deep love, loyalty, and partnership.

Karen was preceded in death by her beloved husband John Hughes; her parents, George and Monteen Holland; and her daughters, Christy Pickens and Laura Nieves.

She is survived by her son, John Hughes; her sisters, Donna Anderson and Lajuana Smith; her cherished grandchildren, Kaylan Hughes and Keegan Knouse; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved her dearly.

Karen had a creative soul. She loved oil painting and had a remarkable talent for it. She also enjoyed crafting, scrapbooking, and was especially known for her beautiful handmade cards-each one a reflection of the care she poured into everything she did. Her favorite color was blue, and she had a special fondness for Cracker Barrel's hashbrown casserole, a simple joy that brought her comfort and happiness.

Above all else, Karen will be remembered for her tender heart. She was sweet, loving, and deeply compassionate. She loved fiercely and completely, often worrying about everyone and everything because her heart was so full of care. Her kindness, warmth, and gentle presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
