Heinz Walter Steves, age 86, passed away on October 28, 2026 at home. He was born on April 7, 1940, in Norwalk, Connecticut, to Peter and Gertrude (Bruss) Steves.
Heinz graduated from Peekskill Military Academy in 1958 and proudly joined the United States Marine Corps following graduation. He honorably served his country from 1958 through 1965. Following his military service, Heinz made his home in Oklahoma, where he built a life centered around family, service, and hard work. Heinz met the love of his life, Mary, on a blind date in Tulsa, OK on New Years Eve. The two quickly found a special connection and were married in August 1965. Together, they built a family and shared many wonderful years. Heinz had a diverse and accomplished career. He attended Spartan School of Aeronautics, where he pursued his passion for aviation, becoming a flight instructor and flying commercial aircraft out of Riverside Airport. From 1971 to 1979, he served the Broken Arrow community and was the first motorcycle police officer. Heinz eventually started his own landscaping and lawn care business, which he operated until his retirement. He also generously gave his time to young people as both a Scoutmaster and Cubmaster. Outside of work, Heinz enjoyed smoking meats, cooking, and traveling. He especially loved spending time with his family, who were always the most important part of his life. His Catholic faith was also an important part of who he was, and he was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church for 20 years.
Heinz was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Gertrude Steves, and his sister, Ellen.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Steves; four sons, Henry and his wife, Donna, Robert and his wife, Denise, Richard and his wife, Sonya, and Chris and his wife, Shelley; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves many other loving relatives, his church family, and countless friends. Heinz leaves behind a legacy of dedication, hard work, service, and, above all, love for his family. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Marys Catholic Church on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at 6:00:00 PM after a visitation at the church starting at 5:00 PM. Heinz will be consecrated in the grave at Fort Gibson National Cemetery on November 5, 2026 at 10:00 AM.
