January 29, 1954 — March 10, 2024

Donald Lee Burns, known to many as Don, peacefully departed from this world on Sunday, March 10, 2024, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He valiantly battled numerous heart issues, but ultimately succumbed to lung cancer. Don passed away serenely at Saint Francis Hospital, surrounded by his cherished companion, Elaine, and his daughter Dana.

Born on January 29, 1954, Donald was the fraternal twin of his beloved brother David and had an older sister named Beverly. His parents, Vivian Weeks Burns and Grover Burns, both held esteemed professions, with Grover contributing his skills to the setup of mission control at NASA, while Vivian served in The Social Security Administration. Later, the family relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, where Don's journey continued.

During his teenage years, Don made the bold decision to leave school and join the Navy, where his exceptional intellect led him to become a signalman. He found solace and joy in being atop the ship, gazing upon the vast ocean and its many inhabitants.

Don's life was marked by significant milestones, including the birth of his first daughter, Jamie. He dedicated 18 years of service to the Social Security Administration, steadily climbing the ranks to Grade II. Later, he embarked on a new chapter with his marriage to Debby, with whom he welcomed his cherished daughter, Dana. He used to take Dana, as a child, to see the many mailboxes lining the road on the way to visit grandpa. Although their marriage eventually ended, Don's bond with Dana remained unbreakable.

Throughout his life, Don embarked on numerous journeys across the country, where he eventually crossed paths with Elaine, with whom he shared 23 years of joyous companionship. Don's quest for knowledge led him to attain a bachelor's degree and delve into the realm of education, where he imparted wisdom to others. He possessed a keen intellect and a profound passion for history, often indulging in crossword puzzles and enriching his mind with episodes of "Jeopardy." Don was also known for his astute awareness of current events.

In addition to his intellectual pursuits, Don had a deep love for music, which he instilled in his daughter Dana. His presence will be sorely missed by a multitude of friends and family members who were touched by his intelligence, hard work, humor, love, and kindness.
