August 30, 1923 — September 7, 2017

Alice Sue (Smith) Cate-Dooley was born on August 30, 1923 in Lenoir City, Roane County Tennessee to her parents, William and Anna Smith.

She died September 7, 2017 in Tulsa, Oklahoma after a very brief illness.

Sue as she was known by her friends and family; worked at Oak Ridge during WWII and held other jobs before marrying Reese Cate on June 19, 1946. They moved to Richmond in late 1940s for work. She lived in Richmond until her death. After Reese’s death in 1963, Sue married Casper Dooley on April 12, 1968. Sue worked at Belden Mfg, retiring in 1988.
Sue accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior as a young married woman at Fairview Baptist Church. She and her husband Reese started Joy Bible Club in 1955 which eventually became Southside Baptist Church and they were charter members. She was a member of Gospel Avenue Baptist Church at the time of her death. Sue had read thru the Bible several times, faithfully reading 3 chapters per day until the day before she died.

Sue was an avid reader and worked crossword puzzles regularly. Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy were her favorite TV shows. Sue had the gift of hospitality, opening her home to family, student missionaries, visiting pastors and others. Sue loved to cook and take food to families and enjoyed making plates of candy and cookies every Christmas for her neighbors.

She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Anna Smith; Spouses, Reese J. Cate and Casper E. Dooley; Stepdaughter, Linda Vogelgesang; Siblings, Verna Scarborough, Andrew Smith, Frank Smith, William Clyde Smith and Ann Wheat (all of Lenoir City Tennessee); Special Sister in laws, Louise Smith, Lola Smith, Inzell Cate and Joyce Abbott.

Sadly, Sue did not get to meet her newest great grandbaby, Noah James Dougherty, son of granddaughter Rachel (Jason) Dougherty of Charlottesville, VA. A trip was being planned for later this month for her to meet Noah; Special Sister in law, Edna Cate and many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to neighbors and friends Roy and Diane Patton and Denise Ballard for their love and special watchful eye for Sue over the years. She stayed in her home longer than she might, because of you. Nieces Margie Perry and Gayle Cate, we are forever grateful for managing all of Sue’s medical appointments, hospital runs and other special requests.
