W.C. Berry

March 13, 1945 — April 25, 2020

W.C. Berry affectionately known as “Berry”, “Da”, and “Da-Da” was born March 13, 1945 to the late Adaline Weathers and Johnnie Berry in Grenada, MS. Both preceded him in death. Along with bothers, M.C., James, Ben, Sonny, Moffet “Pie”, Lewis, Johnnie Berry “Shot” and Earl. Sisters, Willie Lee Davis, Evan. Francis Roberson, Evan. Dorothy Clark, Susan Ann Taylor, Bobby Gale Anderson, and Willie Calvin Berry. Also precedes him in death is son John Scott.

As a child he attended the Pine Hill Elementary School in Grenada, MS. And Crane High School in Chicago, Il. At the age of 8 he made the move from Grenada to Chicago.

W.C. Berry gave his life to Christ. In 1977 he joined Gospel Temple C.O.G.I.C. and was ordained as a deacon. Later he joined a ministerial staff under the leadership of Elder Sidney Grandberry. He was a faithful member that enjoyed serving.

W.C Berry worked as a maintenance engineer for Dominick’s Foods at the age of 19; who trained the staff on floor care. He also loved working as a security officer for Kane Security for Chicago Housing Authority. One of his many places he visited was Lake Etta, Indiana and Wolf Lake, Illinois. There he spent his time fishing and making new fishing buddies. He also enjoyed playing Santa around the holiday for the church, school, and friends. He retired and volunteered his time to help children get to and from school as a Chicago Public School crossing guard at Metcalfe Academy. He was the designated driver for the Jaguar football team for those who lived on Lafayette Avenue. He never met a stranger. He was always known to quote, “ONE THING ABOUT IT…”

On May 27, 1978 W.C. Berry wedded Barbara Jones in holy matrimony at Greater Holy Temple C.O.G.I.C. officiated by Eld. Gayton and Pastor Sidney Grandberry. To this union three children were born.

W.C. Berry departed this life on Saturday April 25, 2020 at 8:10 am. He leaves to cherish his memories, Barbara Berry -his devoted wife, Charles Berry (brother), Blessed Daughters Tanasha Hannah (would periodically make him pot roast some Sundays) and LaConda Bryant. Children Kathryn (David) Ringer, Wesley (Keesha Ellerbe), and Unica Berry. His grandchildren Zacoria Haywood, Zechariah Handson, James and Jerimiah Carney. He leaves two granddaughters by John Scott. W.C. Berry befriended Bruce and Sally (dog) who cared for him during his time of need. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, church family, and friends.
