Paul Richard Nylander

July 4, 1951 — February 18, 2017

Paul Richard Nylander died unexpectedly on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the age of 65.
Paul was born on July 4, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois to Stanley and Florence (DeNardo) Nylander. He married Elizabeth Heiss on June 7, 1975, in Dubuque, Iowa. Paul was a proud alumnus of the University of Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!) and received his MBA from DePaul University. He started his career at International Harvester Company and spent many subsequent years in medical practice management and consulting.

Paul started his family and lived for many years in Warrenville, Illinois, where he was an active member of the community. Paul was a member of the St. Irene School Board and Athletic Board, the Economic Planning Commission for the city of Warrenville and could always be found holding court at the beer tent on the 4th of July. He had a passion for girls’ volleyball and enjoyed coaching at the grade school, high school, and club levels.

Paul loved to travel (well, once he arrived at his destination) and also enjoyed watching movies, fishing, sports, any and all competitive games, particularly spirited rounds of scrabble and euchre. During his time in Oregon, Paul learned to love hiking, snowshoeing, riding the Segway and drinking great craft beer (but was never quite able to master skiing). He treasured his relationships with many friends across the country.

Paul was extremely devoted to and proud of his marriage and family. Of all the titles he carried in his life, he was proudest to be called a husband, father and grandfather, and was very much looking forward to starting his new life in Tulsa.

Paul is survived by his wife of 41 years, Elizabeth Nylander; daughter Kristin (Michael Burke) Nylander; daughter Sara (Deren) Ertugrul; grandson Emre Ertugrul; granddaughter Leyla Belle Ertugrul; brother John (Kathy) Nylander; brother David Nylander; and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 12pm at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Reception with the family will begin at 11am. There will be a luncheon immediately following the service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Paul’s life. A private interment will be held at a later time in Calvary Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the National Park Foundation
