John Eyberg

October 26, 1924 — February 14, 2018

A memorial service honoring and remembering the life of John Eyberg will be held at First United Methodist Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma at a later date. John Eyberg passed away February 14, 2018. He was 93.

John was born October 26, 1924 in Duluth, Minnesota to Alfie Irene (Lindberg) Eyberg and John Oscar Eyeberg.

Those who blessed him during his lifetime included his so very beloved wife, Margaret, a lady of unshakable faith; John his son; Shirley, his daughter-in-law, faithful believers in the faith, Patrick, a grandson much loved by his Granddad, as is Carrie, Patrick's wife; Linda St. Romain, Margaret's daughter, who thought of John as her Heart Dad, and her husband, Roark, a person of ultimate integrity. There are many others including Quentin, his brother, and Roberta his sister-in-law, both of whom who referred to John as Grandjohn, and her husband Michael, and Margaret's sons Scott and Philip, who preceded John in death and added their special kind of flavor to John's life.

John's career left the ground like a rocket delivering newspapers, followed by an excursion into the medical community washing hospital walls. He enlisted in USN Seabees at the age of 17, quickly becoming chief pot and pan washer prior to vacationing in the South Pacific for two years before his honorable discharge. Other career challenges followed immediately. Wintertime de-icer of iron ore trains entering Duluth from the Iron Range, next as fireman on steam engines, and attending college before moving south to Tulsa, OK to melt down, and in the process of melting to meet Margaret. A year of pipeline work out of Danbury, Connecticut, a couple years with the Happy Company where he was pretty happy until joining T.D. Williamson, Inc., his special work from home for the 34 years.

John served the community as board presidents for the Tulsa Urban League, Tulsa Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and the Greater Tulsa Area Corporate Volunteer Council. He also served for eleven years as a member of the Civil Service Commission, City of Tulsa, and was a volunteer with the Salvation Army.

Best of all were the years he and Margaret served together in the Ministry of Counseling Prayer, and as hospital chaplains for the Pastoral Care ministry of First United Methodist Church. In each they witnessed time and again God's grace in bringing healing and wholeness to individuals.

At work and during retirement John wrote for local and other newspapers, religious and secular magazines, and devotional publications. His writings also included books. In retirement he studied and wrote from the backyard office Margaret had built for him shortly after he retired. You see, a house suddenly shrinks when it gains another full - time occupant as it does at retirement.

Immediately prior to his 1990 retirement John had been employed by T.D. Williamson, Inc., Tulsa for thirty-four years, concluding his employment as Vice President for Public Relations.

John was a Christian, and with his wife Margaret, attended First United Methodist Church, Tulsa, OK.

His favorite times were spent with Margaret on their patio watching the backyard come alive in spring, hold its own during the summer, and break out in its annual autumn wardrobe. Of course there was her voice and the piano. When Margaret sat down to play and sign, it was as good as it got for John. Their marriage never quite got over the honeymoon because Jesus was early invited to its center.

A personal note from John: I have always felt the strong support of family and friends despite my faults, and thus I was never hobbled by dwelling on them. I am eternally grateful to my family and friends for overlooking the fault lines, and encouraging the possibilities.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret Eyberg; father, John; mother, Alfie, and son Bill; his brother Quentin and Roberta Eyberg; also Philip and Scott Whitten.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John and Shirley Eyberg; grandson Patrick Eyberg, and wife, Carrie; heart daughter, Linda St. Romain and her husband, Roark; and other special persons, Lesley and Michael Koerner.
