Jerry Lee Tiner

Jerry Lee Tiner passed away peacefully March 21st, 2017 at the age of 87 with his family by his side.

A lifelong Tulsan, Jerry was born on March 13th, 1930 at Morningside Hospital in Tulsa to Elmer Rafer and Margaret Ann (Oliver) Tiner. He attended Jefferson Elementary, Wilson Middle School and graduated from Will Rogers High School.

In 1950, Jerry decided to fulfill his voluntary military obligation and join the United States Air Force. After a year of training at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, he was assigned to the 317th Troop Carrier Wing at Neubiberg Air Force Base near Munich. While in Germany, he developed an immense passion for photography and German culture. After his honorable discharge and return to Tulsa, Jerry was hired at KVOO television (now KJRH) as a cameraman. While at KVOO-TV he worked and learned all aspects of television production eventually becoming News Director. In November of 1969, Jerry continued his career in television working on the CBS national production and broadcast of the Apollo 12 splashdown. He later worked in advertising sales at the Tulsa World and Tulsa Cable before retiring.

On June 4th, 1961 he married Evelyn Lois Neumann at the First Methodist Church in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. During the 60’s and 70’s he was an active member of the Sports Car Club of America participating in weekend slalom racing and road rallies all across Oklahoma. Actively involved in tennis since learning to play in high school, he played in numerous tennis leagues and USTA tournaments around the state, well past the age of 70. He was also instrumental in the development of Tulsa junior tennis players in the 1970’s. Jerry was an avid gardener and enjoyed working in his yard.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn Tiner; son, David of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Susan and husband, Erik Gustafson of Bixby; grandchildren: Reagan and Kaden; sister, Jane Warren and husband, Tom of San Angelo, Texas; niece, Leslie Schwager and husband, Tim of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nephew, Bob Dawson and wife, Diane of Odessa, Texas and many other nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Physicians Choice Hospice for their compassion, guidance and expertise during this difficult time.
