When Gerald was around two, his family moved to the Oklahoma panhandle, settling in the town of Guymon. They lived there until 1954 when, due to their mother's health, they moved to Tucson, AZ. In 1958, Gerald decided to move back to Guymon to work at Quall's Photo Study and complete his senior year of high school. Following graduation he attended two photography schools, one in Tucson and the other in Waco, Texas. After his education he went back to Quall's Studio.

Gerald and Linda married on June 9, 1962 in Guymon, Oklahoma.

While still involved in photography, Gerald began making the drive to small congregations in the area and preaching prior to making the move to preach full time in Keyes, Oklahoma. During their three years in Keyes they had their first child, Patricia, on August 19, 1963. In 1964, they moved to Perry to preach for the Perry Church of Christ for 13 years and had their second child, Cheryl, May 7, 1968.

In 1977, Gerald and his family moved back to Guymon where he preached for the Guymon Church of Christ. After 20 years, Gerald left full time work at the church and preached on Sundays at the church in Satanta, Kansas and worked as a sales executive for Stu Emmert Automotive in Liberal, Kansas. During their time in Guymon, both of his daughters became married and brought four beautiful children into the world.

Three years later he was called back to preach in Perry, Oklahoma where he remained until his retirement in 2017.
