George Galovich

March 28, 1919 — October 13, 2018

George Galovich passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2018 with his family by his side. He was 99.

George was born March 28, 1919 in Benton, Illinois. He was the son of Vasil and Angela Galovich who immigrated to America from Croatia in 1912. The Galovich family relocated to Hibbing, Minnesota, where George spent his childhood.

After graduating from Hibbing High School in Hibbing, MN, George joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), where he helped plant forests. On July 17, 1940 he enlisted in the United States Army. George was a member of the 81st Field Artillery Battalion that served in Alaska. They protected the Pribilof Islands against the feared invasion and fought at the Battle of the Bulge in Western Europe during WWII. He received multiple medals during his time in the service. On July 27, 1945, George was honorablly discharged after serving his country proudly for five years.

George retired after working as an aircraft mechanic for American Airlines for over 20 years. His time with the company afforded him and Ida many wonderful vacations together.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vasil and Angela Galovich; two brothers, Peter and Marko and four sisters, Bernice, Mildred, Amelia and Mary

Survivors include his loving wife of 74 years, Ida Mae (Fast) Galovich; two children, Terry Ann Bruce and her husband, Gary of Bixby,OK and Roger Kent Galovich and his wife, Carol of Austin, TX. He also leaves four grandchildren, Angela Bruce, David Eric Bruce, ,Michael Shaun Galovich and Roger Luke Galovich and ten great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of George to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Sooner Tulsa Chapter, 2642 East 21st Street, Suite 100, Tulsa, OK 74114.

Private Interment will take place at Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.
