Elizabeth Hampton

December 25, 1932 — August 6, 2020

Elizabeth Hampton was born December 25, 1932 in Amory, Mississippi. She departed this life here on earth for her eternal home with Jesus on the morning of August 6, 2020 in Tulsa, OK. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Bettie Howell Hampton of Athens, MS and by her brothers Erby Lee of Amory, MS. and Percy, Frank and James Hampton of Chicago, Illinois. She was married to the late Charles Phipps of Chicago, Illinois.

At an early age in Amory, MS, Elizabeth attended St. James United Methodist Church and graduated from Monroe County Training High School as class salutatorian. Though she spent time in New York City and Chicago, she returned to Mississippi to care for her mother, where she was employed at Walker Manufacturing Inc. as a spot welder and then at Walmart for 17 years in various departments. As a cashier at Walmart, she earned a Retailer of the Year award, which she accepted as a great honor and with tremendous pride.

Elizabeth moved to Harvey, Louisiana in 1989 to live with her daughter, Alta and son-in-law, Walter. Elizabeth continued her employment with Walmart in Louisiana until her retirement in 2005. She also became a member of Believer’s Life Assembly pastored by David Long. There she proudly served as the head greeter and received her diploma from Believer’s Life Bible College.

After the massively destructive Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana in 2005, Elizabeth returned to Chicago, Illinois to provide assistance to both her ailing brother, Percy and his wife, Jennie. While there, she was an active member of Mt. Hope MB Church, now pastored by Rev. Alvis Martin. She was a member of the choir and served as President of the local Missionary Society.

In July, 2014, when her own personal health became a challenge, Elizabeth moved to Tulsa, OK where her daughter, Alta and her husband, Walter, now resides. While there, she became a member of Victory Christian Center and attended Life Senior Services daily until her health became too greatly diminished.

She was affectionately called Lump (short for Lump of Sugar) by friends and family, which was fitting for one that presented such joy and sweetness to everyone she met. She will be remembered as someone who loved singing praises unto the Lord and always had a song in her heart. She never met a stranger; greeting everyone with smiles and hugs, as if they were a long-lost family member. She was recognized at work for her integrity and diligence on the job, her willingness to share her knowledge, and for her warm, engaging personality with everyone she encountered.

She is survived by her only child, Alta Alexander, and son-in-law Walter Alexander, Grandchildren, Darryl Hampton of Tulsa, OK and Joseph Alexander (Andrea) of Katy, TX., Bridgette Alexander of Boutte, LA and Stephanie Dunmiles (George) of Ama, LA. She also leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The family would like to extend a huge heartfelt thanks to Life Senior Services, Leisure Village Memory Care Health Center, A-Vow Hospice and everyone that helped with her care. She loved her care givers and called all of them her children.

Arrangements are entrusted to Schaudt’s Tulsa Funeral Service and Cremation Care, 5757 S Memorial Drive, Tulsa, OK 74145. Family and friends may leave words of comfort, special memories and condolences to the family online at www.schaudtfuneralservice.com/obituaries/obituary-listings.
