She was born May 5, 1927 in Blue Island, Illinois to Dr. Ralph C. and Florence (Hills) Aiken. Edie was the youngest of three daughters born to this family. She grew up and attended school in Blue Island, IL and then received her RN in 1948 from the Michael Reese School of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois.

Edie began her nursing career as a visiting nurse for the Infant Welfare Service of Chicago. She volunteered for Red Cross disaster services and was a member of the Registered Nurse Community Volunteers of Tulsa (RNCV).

She married her husband of almost 60 years, George H. Schroeder, on October 1, 1949, at Peace Lutheran Church in Chicago, Illinois. George was an employee of Cities Service (Citgo) and his job brought the family to Tulsa in 1967. They were active members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Tulsa, where Edie was a faithful choir member. She also prepared many meals for the Good Shepherd family for various occasions.

Edie was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Carol Ruth Aiken and Florence Aiken Field. Her husband George also preceded her in death in 2009. She is survived by her children Barbara Mentzel (husband Robert) and Steven Schroeder (wife Jamie Wooley), all of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and grandchildren Katherine Mentzel Ericson (husband Steven) of Tokyo, Japan, and Leah Mentzel of Owasso, Oklahoma.

Edie was an avid reader, crafter, knitter and seamstress with abilities of the highest quality. She loved dogs and always looked forward to visits from Simone while she was at Saint Simeon’s. She was an impeccable housekeeper and enjoyed music, especially classical music.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Saint Simeon’s on Thursday, August 30th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Simeon Episcopal Home or the Alzheimer's Association.
