Edward F Slothour

May 12, 1933 — March 15, 2019

Edward Frank Slothour was born May 12, 1933, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to parents Frank and Nellie Slothour. Eddie, as he was called at a younger age, was heavily involved in sports, particularity tennis. While in middle school, Eddie worked as a school crossing guard. At age 10, Ed made the decision to follow Jesus. He graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School, in Lancaster, obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology in 1955 from the Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, followed by his Doctor of Medicine in 1959 from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and finally completed a geriatric fellowship at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Ed was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He met his beautiful wife to be, Vivian Wenrich, a nursing student, while completing his residency at the Reading Hospital in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Ed began his employment as a physician in Kentucky at the Red Bird Hospital, form 1960 to 1979. The hospital provided services for the Red Bird Mission and its neighbors. Many of the patients could not afford to pay for their medical care, so they paid Dr. Ed with chickens o vegetables out of their gardens. Though quite risky at times due to flooding rains, he often had to travel by jeep to get to some of the remote, mountainous locations. From there, he served on the teaching staff at St. John's Hospital and at the ORU school of Medicine from 1979 to 1986, while also serving as the Medical Director at University Village Retirement Community. He worked the next six years in Pennsylvania. Ed then returned to practice medicine at the Red Bird Medical Center from 1994 to 1997. From Kentucky, Ed's adventures took him to Florida, where he served as the Medical Director for the Penney Farms retirement community for four years. Dr. Ed returned to Oklahoma in 1999, rejoining the Family Medical Care group and providing services again at University Village until his retirement in July 2009.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Nellie Slothour, and his brother, Don Slothour. Those left to cherish the memory of Ed are his wife of 61 years, Vivian Slothour, his adopted grandson, Joshua Roark and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Edward Slothour's celebration service will be held at the University Village Retirement Community Stovall Theater on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at 2:00 PM.
