Genell Stopp

July 3, 1950 — October 17, 2017

Genell Stopp was born on July 3, 1950 to Betsy W Stopp in Tahlequah, OK at W.W. Hastings Indian hospital. She lived in Tahlequah until the age of 18 when she moved to Tulsa to pursue her education. She received her GED and then furthered her education at Tulsa University, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing Management and Communication in 1985. In 1987-88 she advocated for the fixed route buses to be lift equipped. She bought her first home in 1989 while working for Ability Resources as an Independent Living Counselor. She made appearances on Channel 6 news and made a trip to Washington D.C. to advocate for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In 2004-05 she volunteered to help with a Nursing Home Transition program. She also enlisted the help of a faith based organization to fund some of the transitions. She continued to work with a faith based organization to provide Christmas dinners for people with disabilities whom otherwise wouldn't have had or enjoyed a holiday meal. Along her side was Peggy Stoddard for 36 years as a caregiver and dear friend, and her most recent caregiver Patti McCombs. Besides advocating, her other love was her pets: Dove, Sugar, Spirit and many others.
Genell was an Alumni of TU and a founding member of the Church of St Giles, a faith community dedicated to the concerns of individuals with various disabilities and their families.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Betsy W Stopp, her grandmother, Nellie Waterdown, 2 uncles; Allen "Bullet" Waterdown and Sundie Waterdown.
